COMMON QUESTIONS

We're happy to answer.

Are composite fillings worth it?

Unlike metal fillings, composite fillings do not corrode or expand over time, ensuring they maintain their appearance and integrity. However, they may have a shorter lifespan compared to amalgam fillings, typically lasting around 5-7 years. If a composite filling becomes loose, damaged, or falls out, it can be easily repaired or replaced by your dentist.

How long do composites fillings last?

Composite resin fillings usually last between 5 to 10 years. However, with proper care, some people can keep their fillings for 12 years or more. The longevity of a composite filling depends on various factors, including oral hygiene practices, the location of the filling, and your overall dental health.

How many times can a composite filling be replaced?

There isn’t a fixed limit on the number of times a filling can be replaced. Generally, we stop replacing fillings when the cavity becomes too large to effectively restore. Once the filling material surpasses the amount of natural tooth structure, the tooth may lose its strength and become less viable for additional fillings.

Is a dental deep cleaning necessary?

Not everyone needs a deep cleaning — but some people do. Those who haven't had a cleaning in a while, or who naturally build up tartar more quickly, may require one.

Left untreated, tartar buildup can lead to gum disease, bone loss, and eventually loose or lost teeth. A deep cleaning removes these deposits before they cause lasting damage, helping you keep your teeth healthy long-term.

How often should I schedule my cleaning in Mount Zion Dental?

The number of dental cleanings that are advised might change based on your risk factors and oral health requirements. Most people benefit most from having their teeth professionally cleaned every six months. On the other hand, you could need more frequent cleanings if you smoke, have gum disease, or are prone to cavities.
